Just Moved to Port St. Lucie? Your New-Home Lock Checklist
Welcome to the Treasure Coast! Between the boxes, the DMV, and the new commute, it's easy to forget the locks. Here's the short checklist every new Port St. Lucie homeowner should run through in the first week.
1. Rekey on day one
The single most important item. Previous owners, their relatives, contractors, cleaners, dog walkers — you have no idea how many key copies exist. Rekeying makes every old key worthless and starts your count at zero.
2. Walk every exterior door
Front, back, side, garage entry, lanai — check that each has a working deadbolt that actually throws fully into the frame. Note anything sticky, loose, or missing.
3. Check the sliding doors
Florida homes love their sliders, and sliders love to have flimsy locks. Make sure each one locks securely; a locksmith can add secondary locking if needed.
4. Count your keys — then make spares
Once you've rekeyed, get spares cut for every household member, plus one for a trusted neighbor (never under the mat). Future you says thanks.
5. Consider one smart lock
The front door is the perfect candidate — codes for family, temporary codes for the handyman who's still finishing the punch list.
6. Don't forget the garage & lanai
Side doors and garage entries are the most overlooked. If a door leads inside, it deserves a real lock.
Most of this list is a single locksmith visit. Call (561) 405-1395 the week you move in — we'll handle the rekey, check every door, and leave you with keys you can count. New to the area? See our Port St. Lucie services.
